Robin Milner was a founding father of the theory and principles of statically typed functional programming languages. The following pastiche was written at the occasion of ICFP 2020, with suitable apologies to all parts, starting with Neil Young but also including L. E. J. Brouwer, the founder of the program of intuitionism. It is best read while listening to Neil Young’s song My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), e.g., on youtube:
My my, hey hey.
Props and types are here to stay.
It's better to turnstile
Than to crash away
My my, hey hey.
Out-ui-tio-nism
and F-omega
They give you these
lamb-da cal-cu-li...
But once that's done
you can never go wrong
When you're out of the weak
and into the strong.
Robin is gone
but he's not forgotten.
This is the reward
of Curry Howard.
It's better to be sure
than it is to trust.
Robin is gone
but he's not forgotten.
Hey hey, my my.
Props and types can never lie.
There's more to these features
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.
